A crash course in changing the world.
The project that i have chosen is "Clean Water for Haiti". The reason why i have chosen this project is that Haiti was already a poor country before the earthquake in 2010. But since this environmental disaster the need of the population is bigger than ever. There are still many homeless people who live in camps. The infrastructure is still under construction. But the most important reason for a clean water project are the catastrophically hygienic conditions. In the october of 2010, a ch***ra epidemic broke out through contamined water. The Ch***ra claimed 7000 lives since then and is still still a large problem. Helper expect 200000 new diseases in 2012.
The project "Clean Water for Haiti" tries to give many people access to clean water. Because the most water sources are contaminated they use biosand filters. That is a simple and inexpensive solution. Because the education is mostly limited it is important that the solution is simple. And a biosand filter is simple indeed.
Here is a picture: http://www.cleanwaterforhaiti.org/Images/Whatwedo/biosand_xsection.png
And here is an explanation how it works: "When water is poured into the Biosand filter every day a biological layer starts to build up in the top layer of the sand bed. The "good microbes" in the bio-layer start to feed off of the "bad microbes" and develop an active little community. Organisms like worms and protozoa can't pass through the sand bed so there is a natural "die off" process that happens too. The biosand water filter can effectively filter out up to 99% of all microbes(bacteria, protozoa, viruses and worms), giving Haitian families an affordable solution for their water needs."
