There are a few efforts being forth in my local community.
One such effort is through the Richmond Rescue Mission, a nonprofit organization that feeds, clothes and shelters the homeless from a one night's stay, to possibly weeks or months -- depending on their cooperation to program rules. As this organization is nonprofit, it can only continue to run with the help of the donations that come in from private corporations -- those that have been committed for many years. This continues to happen today, but for certain monhs, this organization and others like it run short and send out more solicitation letters than normally they would do. These are what they cosider their letters of urgency.
Another community effort is through Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. They also are supported by the community and local businesses and have already sent their "911" letter for solicitations for the summer months. They emphasize that the summer monhs are extremely hard in their first paragraph and ask that people commit to a THREE MONTH COMMITMENT TO FEED THE AREA'S HUNGRIEST PEOPLE IN THE SUMMER MONTHS, making donations to keep food available for specific groups -- such as for emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and afterschool programs.
Along with the letters, they provide pictures of those target audiences that they desire to feed.
The best way to reach is through correspondence to the public soliciting funds -- even though someone may not have given the first, second or even third, continue to correspond because it may be the fourth or fifth time that someone commits to a donation. Those organizations that need the help should never give up seeking help.
