A crash course in changing the world.
According to the World Health Organization, over 2 billion people world-wide do not have access to clean water; an estimated 5 million people per year die of waterborne illnesses. (Former) King Hussein of Jordan and Boutros Boutros Ghali are both said to have declared that the next war (in the Middle East) will be over water." By 2025, 40 countries in the Middle East and Africa are expected to experience water stress or scarcity. (http://http://www.unep.org/OurPlanet/imgversn/154/lonergan.html)
Two of my favorite innovations for helping bring clean water anywhere are portable, potable, and affordable.
Tom Joseph, founder and president of Epiphany Solar Water Systems, Inc., is working with two attorneys: his sister, Amy Joseph, and Eddie Edwards Jr., who co-chair Project Eviive, One Gallon, One Life.

"Epiphany's solar desalinization unit can cost less than one-fifth as much as conventional water desalinization units to install, operate and maintain," estimates Tom Joseph. "A bicycle mechanic...would know enough to keep this running," adding that there is no fuel, only a 10-foot-diameter solar mirror to collect solar energy. Maintenance entails 10 minutes a month, to brush out the unit's interior. (http://http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/business/s_64...)
Dean Kamen, entrepreneur and inventor, (Segue PT, etc.) has worked extensively on projects involving an EVOKE favorite--the Stirling engine, one to generate power, and the other, a water purification system, currently under U.S. Patent 7,340,879. (http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean_Kamen)
Dean Kamen can be viewed discussing advanced technology, clean water, and his "Sling Shot" water purification method.

The Slingshot, invented in 1993, runs at very low cost, and is energy efficient. Basically a distiller and condenser, it produces ten gallons of water (from any source, ocean, sewers, ground flow...) per hour using 500 watts of electricity. Kamen reportedly plans to bring his water purifier to rural villages all over the world (he has also created an electric generator--the inspiration for the Slingshot--which operates on fuel made from cow manure). One last water purification project, which is really BIG, is the Hyland Park 1 Reservoir system which supplies the drinking water for the residents of Pittsburgh, PA. The 120-million-gallon reservoir, located in a beautiful residential park, is now serviced by the Pall membrane-filtration system. The microfiltration system developed by Pall can produce 20-million gallons of clean water per day.(http://http://www.pall.com/water_8150.asp)
