A crash course in changing the world.

Conserve fuel and protect the environment by using public transports

I just need to rant about something. I'm sure all of us had came across people who won't stop complaining about the inflation of gas prices and then they do nothing about it while continuing driving 5 blocks away to McDonald's or the grocery stores. Really? Are these people that lazy to even walk? Here we are, with the world facing fuel depletion crisis* and desperate looking for solutions to replace oil and gas and yet the number of cars on the road continue to increase rapidly! These people don't even take into consideration how it damages the environment and they just shrug at the issues of pollution away and continue to moan about gas inflation.

I believe most of us are city dwellers, and the question is "How hard is it to stop being lazy and get up and walk, cycle, run and take public transports in the city?" It isn't that hard. I commute to school everyday. This is one reason why people are getting fat from lack of activities in their daily routine and trust me, it's way cheaper using public transports than the cost to maintain cars. And we all know that the price of commodities are tied to the price of fuel, when the price of oil inflates so do the price of our food. SO, it isn't too late to start encouraging the use of public transports.

It's time world leaders do something about the number of cars allowed in every countries. Make public transports more accessible to everyone, jack up the prices of cars, limit the number of cars allowed on the road each years, put people on waiting list for cars etc.

Make a change for the environment, ourselves and the future generations who will inherit the earth. It isn't that far fetch.

*(It's been speculated that the world will be stripped of oil and gas in less than 10 years)

i am one hundred percent behind you on this. i gave up owning a car ten years ago and never looked back. i am all for restriction of destructive devices (like automobiles)

I agree with this. Anyhow, rich people can have as many cars as they want as long as these are hybrid cars. We cant stop these filthy rich people to buy cars as long as they can.

True. I'm all for hybrid cars anyway!!

Me too.

I'll... respond with a slightly less me-too post.

Soccer moms, in the states, tend to have SUVs because a couple times a week they transport stupid amount of children and gear around the city. Using them as a strawman argument isn't very useful. (And they don't use station wagons due to CAFE regulations.)

Authoritarian mandates of "living cleaner" without anticipating the requirements of the subject tend to have this sort of backfire.

I live in Sydney, and I don't own a car. So I use Sydney's public transportation to get around. Interesting fact: do you know what the most polluting form of transport is?

A city bus, late at night, with 1 passenger.

The trick is not authoritarian laws to restrict car ownership that will just be flaunted anyways. It's to extend the DARPA x-prize system, for example, to a Vingian scenario as he sees it in Rainbows end. Make something that can compete with cars. A shared car that can drive itself.

Forcing change down peoples throats will have them reject change, and have that change fail.

Hey Brian, thank you for your input and I do understand your POV of implementing change. But I still think it's at the point in time where's it's crucial for a change. But perhaps both sides would need to compromise?

Hahaha, "Lazy stupid", very straightforward, Panamericana!
Comment by Brian Ballsun-Stanton on March 20, 2010 at 3:02am
Ms Tang, compromise is actually a trap here. It gets us the worst of both worlds. The trick is to offer a product that fits their needs better than the present ones.

One option would be to pool the resources of EVOKE to offer an x-prize of our own. Let's out innovate, not out-restrict.
Comment by Comelia Tang on March 20, 2010 at 3:22am
@ Brian, So, what kind of innovations do you think will replace the present ones, and that may take some time...for all we know this is going to be a slow change while resources are being depleted rapidly.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
