Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

The Place

Where will you make a difference? Describe the institution, community, town or other geographic or virtual space in which you will focus your
efforts.

I will start with a Living Library in Waterloo Region, I have already started research on funding from federal and provincial grant sources.

My initial service are would be: http://tinyurl.com/2byn49u

On a more global level, I want to eventually see National and then perhaps International Living Libraries. I want to preserve the indiginous knowledge that we loose a little of every time someome pa**** on!!

The Challenge

What will you aim to change, and for whom? Highlight what is the need that you perceive and who will benefit from this change.

The major power outages and severe weather of previous years which have disrupted power and other services made me realize how little we know
about survival skills in this modern age. How much we cannot do without
the aid of technology and without damaging our environment.

I want to put a call to seniors everywhere who want to share their knowledge! They are repositories of large amounts of knowledge that is at this point untapped and often seen as "useless". Lets teach our youth about where their food comes from, how to manage their water resources better, how to reduce the impact of our cities on the environment.

I want to bring education on green technology, crafts and skills to my community and build a community where everyone teaches and learns in a non judgemental and socially acceptable fashion. Too many people these days are unaware of where things come from, how to live greener without sacrificing comforts or how to live sustainably.

The Idea

Your solution – what is the action, product, service, project, change that you will initiate? Tell us how will your idea will succeed where others have failed.

The idea is to create a school where members of the community teach and learn together in a non judgemental and socially acceptable manner. To start, I want to have programs that teach people what to some are gender specific skill sets. For women, I want to have lessons in woodworking, metal crafts, auto maintenance, and general home repair. For men, I want to have lessons in cooking, sewing, fabric crafts (knitting, crochet, weaving, spinning) and food preserving. The goal being to allow people to be able to be independant. I want us to adapt to our changing world and learn to live more in harmony with nature instead of always fighting it!

I see mine succeeding because it takes away a lot of the barriers that our society has created around these skills. I want to change the perception that they are not needed, that technology will always be there, that some tasks are gender specific and the general disconnect that we as humans have with our world.

The Money

What would you do with your first US$1,000 given or invested in support of your vision?

The first thing we need to do is acquire secure provincial or federal funding to purchase the property and facilities for the school. Ideally we would like to take one of the "mothballed" schools that exist in our region because they are already set up to support a lot of what we want to do. Then we need to get the administration and staff together so we can set out what skills we will teach at launch. Once we have the property, we will want to furnish the school with equipment and a library.

Hello Allison! love your idea, question: are you planning to submit a formal evokation to UEvoke?
I see that you have contacts with good people doing something similar, or at least with the same intentions.
If you already have started the project and you also have the physical space, can I suggest you to change the post in accordance in order to make it more convincent, for example:
Add your name and address (at leat the country)
Where is Waterloo Region?
If you aleady know how many members of the staff will initially be workig at the living Lybrary (janitor, orderly included) the teachers, what will the teachers taech exactly and where did they get that knowledge?
If you have any idea of how many people will come at the begining and how you will grab their attention and make them stay, please I would like to know.
Do you know by any chance how much money do you need before you start? I mean apart from the 1000 USD.
lat question: once you have the library working, how is it supposed to be maintained? who will provide the money?
I will be glad to hear a reply, Thanks!

I love the idea but one questions--do you need physical locations?

With the power of the web to connect people I could foresee this being entirely a digital class room. Or If the personal interaction is a key component, since the plan is to institute this locally maybe it is hosted a different people's houses. That would save money and it would increase the sense of community!

Thinking forward how would you institute this initiative globally. The plan here is to change the world so it would be good to mention in your evokation how you see this having a global effect.

I will be monitoring the progress of your evokation so keep us posted and I will stop by to offer more comments and suggestion if you are interested. --Wintermute :)

this is a very interesting idea. I agree with wintermute, perhaps funding would better be utilized in a web setting, rather than on a physical space. good evoking

Agent Allison, I think your idea is a barrier breaker!
Often I criticize the education system in Africa and many parts of the world. Reason is, we spend over 15 years in school learning THEORY in a world that demands PRACTICAL SKILLS!
In Uganda for example, the technical institutions are picking up little by little, But even then, the ministry of education has not yet fully integrated these practical skills in the curriculum which is pretty sad.
On the same note, students choose University over these Technical Institutions because the Universities are more credible and they assume that after acquiring a "University Degree" the employment sector will be ready for them.
This is one of the factors that have led to the increasing levels of unemployment and under employment.
On the other hand, a student from a technical institution can set up a small business. Maybe a workshop - carpentry, metal work, a garage etc. And this could change their lives with out depending on the employers.
So, your idea is incredible. :)
If there is any addition I can make in your evokation, I would be glad to contribute.

Ternura Rojas - This project is still very much in the planning stage, as I get more of a footing I will gladly post it here (assuming the site remains postable). Right now I am still gathering people to be part of the "staff", some of the knowledgeg base they have is from life experience and some formal education. I am investigating provincial and federal funding.

Waterloo Region is in southwestern Ontario, Canada - http://tinyurl.com/2byn49u
Wintermute & Michele Baron - Personal interaction is a crucial component though I am open to adding the content in a web format in addition to the cla****.

Ssozi Javie - Bringing down the barriers is a large part of my initiative! I am a big fan of hands on learning and in people learning the "older way" of doing things and learning to live in cooperation with our environments.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
