From Motor City to Maker City: The ‘Model T’ of wind energy

You would think that the prospect of new wind turbines coming to your community would be welcomed as more and more people are realizing that we are living in the age of peak oil. But when the community response to such investment is "it scares the living hell out of us", you know that there are some serious drawbacks inherent with wind turbine technology.

For 700 years, the only way to harness the power of wind was through spinning blades and turbines. But now there is another way to harness the wind - a way that's modular, scalable, efficient and without any moving parts.

Agents, please let me introduce you to the work of Accio Energy. From their website:

Accio Energy is making distributed wind energy systems scalable, reliable, and affordable with Aerovoltaic energy systems that directly convert wind energy to electricity without any moving parts. Accio Energy Aerovoltaic energy systems offer the low cost of big wind with the modularity and flexibility of solar. It's a new direction in wind energy.

A YouTube video of the 10-minute of the founder's TEDx Detroit speech,
includes a visual sketch of what the
wind energy device will look like around the 5:20 mark.

Some other details about their work, as covered by AnnArbor.com:

  • the device, which wouldn't use any moving parts or generate noise, uses the wind to separate electrical charges on thin engineered tubes and create electricity
  • it should generate electricity at twice the rate per square meter of solar panels
  • “You could put one on the roof or you could put a million in the Mojave Desert. It’s the same fundamental technology"
  • the device, which could be molded into a variety of shapes, could generate 1 kilowatt of electricity per hour using 640 inches of engineered tube. That would be enough to provide about 20 percent of a
typical home's power for a year, according to various energy
organizations. White said it might be possible to manufacturing the
tubes at existing Michigan facilities for 1 cent per inch
  • “You can kind of look at this like being the ‘Model T’ of wind energy. We can apply automotive mass production manufacturing
ideas to creating non-turbine wind energy and do it using technology we
have here in our place at low cost.”
And, in this quite telling statement:

“Putting this technology in close proximity to the population who are concerned with issues associated with traditional turbines is a very attractive market”

Incidentally, Accio is the summoning charm in the Harry Potter universe.

I hope Accio brings its magic to the manufacturing base of Detroit and to the rest of the world.

It's interesting that one of the biggest problems for wind power isn't technological, but social. People saying "not in my backyard".

Disappointing, but you've shared a great piece of technology for those people.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

The meal

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
