A crash course in changing the world.
The closest city I live to is Gainesville. While with some Gainesville residents today, I discussed with them different hurricane disaster issues. When I asked them about how they would prepare to leave in the instance of a hurricane evacuation, they listed off things such as pack up most important personal items, pack up animals and bring other non-replacable items. I found it interesting that they didn't list things like food. When I asked them about what they would need to stock up on in the case of being stuck at home the only thing they really listed was water. I asked them how much water they thought they would need. The main reply was 3 or 4 cases of water for a family of 4. I then informed them that they would actually need to stock about 1 gallon of water per person per day. Everyone seemed rather shocked so I then told them about how Santa Fe College here in Gainesville has an online hurricane preparation plan that they can access for further information. Overall, I thought it was surprising how much people don't really know about preparing for the case of a hurricane disaster. Hopefully, they will check out the SFC online plan to further their hurricane preparation knowledge and pass that knowledge on to other friends as well!
