The article I read (
http://portal.unesco.org/ci/en/ev.php-URL_ID=30407&URL_DO=DO_TO...) discussed a UNESCO initiative being discussed in a forum in Geneva today: The issue of gender equity as it pertains to the role of ICT worldwide.
Through my career, I've always seen ICT as "the great equalizer", although in the field of education this refers de facto to "assistive technology", equalizing students with different learning needs, or disabilities. It wasn't until reading this article that I realized how the same could be applied to the issue of gender equity.
As an equalizing element, technology is certainly a viable battleground, since its ubiquity, anonymity and flexibility all make it an ideal subject both to pursue and through which to pursue, well, anything.
The article mentions how women should feel empowered by accessing information and improving their skills, and to be sure, technology is the ideal platform to deliver such opportunities.
I chose this article not only because it speaks to the issue of equity, but also to the field of ICT, one in which I am personally engaged.
Here's to both: Education for all.
