A crash course in changing the world.
Harish Hande is an Indian social entrepreneur who specialises in helping to bring electricity to underdeveloped regions. He started by selling solar-powered headlamps to Indian rosepickers, collaborating with banks to get them loans so they could buy the headlamps. With the extra money they made through increased productivity, they were able to earn enough money to pay back those loans.
From there, he formed SELCO in 1995, which has now installed 65,000 light solar lighting systems, and payments are helped by the cooperation of banks in lending to SENCO's mostly rural customers, This is a truly inspirational achievement. CNN's story on it highlighted three key points to learn from the SENCO story, namely "Teahc Customers", "Create Win-Win Situations" and "Sell Experiences", great lessons for any aspiring social entrepreneur.
