Involving Males in the Promotion of Gender Equality

I chose a story from the Women's Watch feed with an interesting alternative perspective: male roles in the creation of gender equality.

The story is here.

One of the most important insights to be gleaned from this, and a key message in this area was that "these programmes need to be extended to boys still in their early childhoods in order to achieve better results".

In my mind, this is tremendously key, as… Continue

The Favour Bank

In my research, I came across this idea about the future of money from Cat Cramer, in which money has been replaced by favours.

The idea is simple - when you need something, you go to the Favour Bank and look for a card with that favour. All you need to do in return is put your own card back in the bank in return, listing all the favours you could do for someone else.

A positive extra from this… Continue

The Arborloo

Sometimes solutions to water problems don't involve water as directly as one might think.

The Arborloo was developed by Peter Morgan, a Zimbabwean and was originally deployed in Ethiopia, but its success has led to it being moved into other African nations.…

Harish Hande - Founder of SELCO

Harish Hande is an Indian social entrepreneur who specialises in helping to bring electricity to underdeveloped regions. He started by selling solar-powered headlamps to Indian rosepickers, collaborating with banks to get them loans so they could buy the headlamps. With the extra money they made through increased productivity, they were able to earn enough money to pay back…

United Kingdom Food Shortage

I'm from the United Kingdom, and upon doing some brief research into the issue of food shortages in this country, I found this story on the Guardian website detailing the potential prooblems that could be created by a lack of reliable food sources.

Britain's problem is more its total dependency on food supplies form overseas, and how that could cause massive problems if those supplies were ever in… Continue

Who can know what life holds in ten years' time?

I will still be learning, and will be making a positive impact. How that will manifest itself, I'm not sure, but something in the field of education.

Dreaming Big (Thanks to Tim):

I will be working somewhere outside of Europe, immersed in a totally different culture, overseeing a project to increase education standards amongst under-privileged children, with specific focus on the importance of…

Wanted to say, having done some vbreif research, I've also decided to follow John Wood's Room to Read blog.

Within the sphere of social innovation, it is eduction that interests me most, and specificially within that, I truly believe that reading is one of the keys to creating social equality. Reading can empower people in developing countries, and help them to develop their own socially innovative ideas. Room to Read…

I have chosen to follow One Laptop Per Child's blog, as it is a socially innovative company that I very much admire. It helps children in developing countried to become more empowered by providing one alptop to each schoolchild, helping to make education a priority, not a privilege. In following this, I will indirectly be following Nicholas Negroponte, the company's founder in 2002. Hopefully this will inspire me to create my own socially innovative…

All fascinating insihgts into being a "Social Innovator", but the ones which held the most reosnance with me personally are definitely those from Ethan Zuckerman, and in particular I would like to highlight the third post: "Embrace market mechanisms".

This is a key point that people often forget: If people are merely given something, they too often take this for granted. However, having to work harder for something means that a person is more psychologically…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
