Time and time and time again i hear the voice of the citezens of England. they have they're own opinions, and all entitled to scream on the top of their lungs what the believe. But when you see someone reading The Gaurdian in the train, usually you hear the hear the tut of dissapointment and the very unsacred line of: "look at all these immigrants, coming in to my country taking our jobs."
I couldn't comment on what everyone else on that carriage thought but, i can say what a saw, and i didn't see the reaction i expected. No angry men jumping at his throat, no one debating with him the reasons why we have immigrants in our country, and why they have 'our' jobs (because they have a better work ethic) but there was no reaction everyone just turned a blind eye. Apart from one family.
A family of a muslim background i believe a father a mother and a child all sitting opposite this arrogant man. and then i saw a reaction. It was quite clear to me how immtimidated the family were of the racist abuse indirectly aimed at them. This family could've lived in england for over a hundred years but it was clear to me they are still outsiders and the untrusted members of society in the view of the nation. As the father's eyes glared at the racist, he stood up and confronted the dad on what he was upto and wether he was looking for a fight.
At which point i went over and spoke to the man. I explained how you proberbly offended the man with his comments and how he should proberbly apologise for his ways. He then explained to me how he wasn't a racist because he didnt call them ni**ers or pa*is or any other discriminitive word in our laguage. At which point, i explained how many the immigrants are of a different race of the protestant english country, and how labeling them as a group of immigrants and abusing they're way of life is deemed as racist and xenophobic.
Then he thought, with a puzzled look on his face, and he seemed to understand, slowly, he may have been in the wrong. He then apoligised to the muslim family and moved carrages. Afterwards i spent a long time talking to the family about how the prime minister should show more attention to us and wether we thought he was a bully or not.
Then it occurred to me that if we sent these people with old fashon views to be surrounded with people of different races, and instead of abusing them, they sat down and spoke to them, then they could get an insite in to other people's lives and realise they are human just like anybody else. So the next time you are on a train, sit down to the person whom is the least alike you. Wether on skin colour, age, gender, fashion sense or citezenship and say "hello" and maybe we could all learn to respect eachother at last.
