A crash course in changing the world.
A warm breeze drifts through my little garden retreat, the pergola illuminated by moonlight and solar orbs
and scented with honeysuckle, jasmine and datura. I sit in the place of honor, dressed in cotton and silk, dyed violet with the juice of bluberries. . . I am 66 years old today, and content that the cottage I have loved for over thirty years is a sustainable, living legacy I can leave to my granddaughters.
Who would have thought you could do so much with so little? My house leaves a small footprint, we've managed to convert almost everything to bio-friendly alternative energy sources. Even though we're still on the grid, we only rely on electricity for our refridgeration and the television (yes, my husband still insists on his old-school flat-screen for sports. . .) Like most old folks, we reuse everything - and my garden is an oasis of innovation, wrapping around my home with it's citrus, avocado & mango trees, kitchen garden and of course, the flowers that are blooming everywhere.
My darling husband is grilling basa from our tank, and we'll eat it with mango salsa and a chopped salad of home-grown mesclun, romaine, endive & arugula topped with crumbled goat cheese and walnuts. (We barter my soap and cloth for the things we don't produce.) It's so nice to have our circle of community merchants and producers and to avoid the mall sprawl for the most part. I've learned alot in the past ten years, increasing my knowedge of holistic healing and organic gardening. Helping to found the Vineyard Community Garden was the start of a wonderful decade! For now, this evening, I'm content to sit and listen to the voices of the young ones around me. To raise my glass to meet the ones raised to me, and give thanks to God for all of it.
