A crash course in changing the world.

This is the US Government Printing Office. Well, part of it, anyway.
This is where I hope to work in 10 years. It's a place that is rapidly changing the way Americans get information about their government, as well as how they access it. For those that don't know, this is the largest publisher in the world -- it publishes virtually every item the federal government releases, in any format, from almost every agency.
For years, it was run by publishers... however, as a government institution, its job is not to make money, it is to provide a service. With that in mind, my dream job here would be fostering programs on information literacy, access to government materials, education on government materials, information on FOIA, and even a better system for classifying these items -- to ease access. Some of the best info, for instance, comes from the science agencies of the government, but it is a giant hassle to access it. I would like to help fix that.
Each day I will be striving to make Americans more informed as to what their government is doing, how it is doing it, and how they can become part of the conversation that is democracy -- at least, the democratic side of our government.
And, perhaps, we can set up a sustainable model to be mirrored by other countries. GPO is currently shifting much of its collection to a digital format. Perhaps, in the future, other governments can have this bredth of publication, allowing their citizens to access much knowledge that would otherwise be kept by the state, and do it in a manner that makes access and use paramount in importance.
