There is no saying where I will be in 2020. I could be anywhere in the world, travelling anywhere where people need inspiration, hope, and a hero to look up to.
My actions are double sided.
On the one hand, I conduct bioengineering research, focusing on the physical, biological problems that ail people. Diseases, disorders, even famine, are all fair game for bioengineering. By first figuring the protein pathways and mechanisms that contribute to uncontrollable, cancerous cell growth, I have discovered a compound that can inhibit and stop cancer in its tracks. By applying knowledge of cell metabolism, I have contributed to the development of a cost-efficient method of growing meat in the lab, contributing to the effort to alleviate hunger.
On the other, everywhere I travel, I try to learn about and understand not only the visible problems of the people there, but those of the heart. In this day and age, it's easy for young people to lose hope and give up when they realize that the world around them is so big, so callous, and in many cases, so corrupt. In a world where it seems like only the most cutthroat survive and money rules, how can one expect to succeed by being kind, honest, and compassionate? Where is there place for heroes? The youth are the future, and I am determined to keep their fires lit. I tell them that they are the heroes, that they must believe in themselves and their ideals, that they must act themselves to achieve change. I tell them that life is not about monetary success, that happiness cannot be bought. Happiness is following their dreams and being true to themselves.
Technology and science can only do so much. True power to change the world lies within the heart, and that flame must be kept alive.
