So you want to know what it was like when I was a child? Back when mankind hadn't "decided" what was right at every level of the ecosystem (if you can even call it a system its more like a sloppy programmer's goto loop). Instead of genetically engineered plants that had the best "optimization" characteristics for human exploitation we had whatever nature decided to throw our way (ok we planted crops and such but most of the land wasn't planted).
Why we had to go and take out weeds - those are plants which we decided were not what we wanted growing in a particular place. Now every plant is perfectly chosen to make what people need. I remember when we had trees - they were amazing things taller than houses. Of course they decided that we needed much more salt resistant varieties of plants after the flooding and trees were seen as a waste of biomass.
We had endless insect varieties - not just those deemed necessary to complete the biocycle. We had insects that ate your blood and spread diseases! I know it doesn't sound pleasant but humans were not making all the choices back then and mother nature had a lot of favorites besides just humans.
Those pictures you see of birds and rodents - they used to be all around us - heck we used to have wh*** tracts of land dedicated to animal sanctuaries. I know now we utilize every square foot in order to optimize and produce but back then we had more aesthetic concerns and we believed there was a fragile web which kept the world a place worth living.
The knowledge I have is that there was an interconnection between all things much more subtle than the chemical formulas they used to come up with the biocycles of today. Back then you could sense how each strange insect and creature fit into a larger wh*** that was rich and wonderful. There was always a mystery and infinite variety. Heck we were discovering new species every day.
If we ever do discover another planet with life cherish the unique web that it has created. Don't simply replace it with something "better". Humans are upstarts who like to make everything "their way" but there is more to this universe than a single solution and you should look deeper for a greater meaning than the bottom line.
My favorite secret was how the deer were smart enough to congregate inside of parks during hunting season - I never wanted to tell anyone for fear they would open up more land or guard the trails going in. Those animals wanted to live and while they may not have had the best biomass characteristics we are less now that they are gone.
