I chose a story from the Women's Watch feed with an interesting alternative perspective: male roles in the creation of gender equality.
The
story is here.
One of the most important insights to be gleaned from this, and a key message in this area was that "these programmes need to be extended to boys still in their early childhoods in order to achieve better results".
In my mind, this is tremendously key, as gender inequality, not only in developing countries but also in the most advanced nations, is something that can become imbedded in children's minds at a very young age due to the prevalence of exisiting social norms with a bent towards patriarchal superiority.
According to the article, abundant empirical evidence has shown that through direct engagement
about gender inequality issues, boys and men not only become more
gender sensitive, but more willing to challenge patriarchal structures,
masculine social norms and the imbalance of power within relationships. This is something that can only be encouraged.
Educating people about gender equality simply can't start soon enough, and it's great to see that this programme is helping with that.
