I tried to look at something that I could do specifically, like live on $2 a day. However, then I had to start thinking, does this include what I already have in my fridge? Can I use the mustard to make a sandwich? Can I try to do it for a week and if so could I purchase my groceries ahead of time and spread it our for the week? Even so, it wouldn't even really compare, I still have clean running water and bathroom at my fingertips, so then I really more or less had to get into the mindset of what it would really be like to BE in that situation. I have travelled to second world countries and you can definitely see the difference but to make change, you have to work with what you've got. So in essence all the steps are necessary. You must look and a****s the people in that region, their resources, their knowledge. Obviously even with limited resources, they would have come up with their own innovations to maximize what they have. So it's always best to talk to them personally, understand their mentality, ask them what they would like to see changed, what their needs are, use existing commodities, for it is far easier to incite change if it is welcomed. Then when they see the benefits of working together, more change will come and accelerate.
Of course, if you don't have this knowledge, find a mentor, learn from them, give hands-on assistance. Learn, act, become a mentor and teach others to do the same.
Right now I am in the process of such. I started from just wanting to be a part of something positive. So I looked around, found people willing to teach and I give my time and skills to help create and evoke change right here in my community. Right now we are hosting a ChangeMakers Social to simply gather like minds/future thinkers in hopes of creating open knowledge and eventually communities that are socially conscious, giving and taking action that will not only stem from our locality but also globally as well.
With open arms and open eyes,
Ra
