My immediate neighbor to the south, Mexico, has seen it's share of problems in recent times. The constant battle waged against drugs, lawlessness and corruption has been spilling over into our own borders for several years now, to the point where our command has forbid it's personnel to step foot on Mexican soil. At one point, grenade attacks were a constant, and very real threat to the physical security of Mexican nationals; And what of the food security?
While maize is certainly considered a staple food of Mexico, it's abundance may have been overestimated; Or worse yet, not estimated in the least. Overtrading of maize is one factor that could possibly lead to a shortage of food in Mexico, and rather soon; But what happens when this becomes a real threat?
Ever heard of Somalia? You may have seen Black Hawk Down, but I'm referring less to US involvement, and more to the control of the flow of foodstuffs by regional warlords. In Mexico, where tales of corruption of local police forces are as common as the violence imposed by declared outlaws, this sort of scenario becomes a rather viable one.
Due to my location, and the fact that nearly all attempts to suppress the worsening situation in the aforementioned region, I consider Mexico to be home to one of the worst food security locations in my immediate surroundings.
