A crash course in changing the world.

lessons from the movie/doc**entary INVICTUS

it was exhilarating to see how nelson mandela ( morgan freeman ) in the movie INVICTUS motivated the rugby team of South africa. They were underdogs for the tournament and went onto become the champions.

the movie shows that evoking the spirit of nationalism with positive influence can create wonders.

Now, here's my idea:

why don't we encourage socially underprivileged to take part in sports. Goverment selects best of the lot and provides them training. They are encouraged/motivated to win medals at olympics from the day they are selected. Give them training for 3-4 years. these people have tremendous will power. they have enormous hunger for success, and so their dedication is unmatched. victory in sports that too by a socially underprivileged is a head-liner in the newspaper and it truly instills hope and positive outlook in the people of the nation..

i would like to give some examples from india's perspective:

1. If you have visited an Indian construction site,You will find many potential gymnastics champion. I recently saw a man walking across thin
planks on the 15th floor of a building. He did this with no safety.
Bring that man down 200 feet and put him on a four-foot high balance
beam and surely he will dance bollywood tunes on the beam. India could
easily field a gymnastics team from our construction sites.

2. Now, Take the rickshawpullers, living on a high protein and carbohydrate diet of dal and roti, these men transport riders in 40-degree weather
for 14 hours a day, seven days a week. Take the best among them and
train them for Tour-de-France as training for Olympics. Who would you
think will have a harder time switching places- rickshawpullers or lance
Armstrong? My bet…Mr.Lance…

3. Our fisherman sail three months of the year in the hardest monsoon conditions.Brutal rain don’t hamper these rough-and-tough sailors. Take
the best of these men and train them for three years and they will be
formidable Olympic contenders.

4. Likewise we can bet on men and women working at the construction sites, They can be seen lifting pounds of
brick and dirt onto their head…watch there motion…they can win us
weightlifting medal.

5. Each year, the best American athletes go to train in Colorado 5,000 feet above sea level as high altitudes makes the lungs stronger. If we take
our best and train them in Leh, 14,000 feet above sea level, imagine
what supermen and superwomen we may develop.
The Indian countryside and cities are replete with future Olympians. These men and women train
daily in the hardest of conditions with simple diets. Without a doubt,
with proper training and infrastructure, these men and women will add to
our Olympic golds.

you can see, the model is applicable to africa as well..

I totally agree with you. I work in a London inner-city school and the power of sport- and in particular basketball and football (soccer)- to engage, motivate and transform young people is clear for me to see every day. I like the local knowledge that you've shared with us. Thanks for the blog.

Paras and this model can be applied in Latin America too. I really like this blog!!! Normal people all over the World do extraordinary tasks every day just to survive and they don´t get any medals. As you say just imagine what they could achieve if they had a healthy diet and a chance to train.

1+ Creativity! My undergraduate degree was in sports management and one of my favorite cla**** was sport psychology. In grad school I wrote a paper on how engaging school children in sports could help the 'Troubles' in Ireland/N Ireland. Being an avid athlete myself, I know the benefit of sports and games. Great idea.

I like this idea because apart from motivated sportsmen/women we would get thier communities easily motivated and united. Media coverage is also easier to attract when a ball is involved and of course, funds are easier to rise for sport activities. Well done paras!

excellent post - sport and games - everyday people doing amazing things simple because no one told them cannot do it..... the power of yes

hey - what about a series of videos posted of people doing these things...create a website... or a you tube channel... like everyman Olympics... showcase people just doing amazing things in there normal day to day...

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
