This is a bit of a sidebar post that doesn't fit in with the mission, but it definitely embodies the spirit of EVOKE.
Chemist George Whitesides created a
paper "chip" that uses the hydrophobic properties of comic book ink (yes, comic book ink) to guide blood through little paper channels to an indicator chemical. Those indicator chemicals can diagnose anything from tuberculosis to malaria. Sounds good? Here's the kicker; each little square of paper costs a cent to make.
This really takes the idea of simplicity and sustainability and does a lot with it. Here you have a man who identifies a problem, finds something that we have that will solve the problems, and comes up with a creative and effective solution. We should all strive to be more like Dr. Whitesides.
