Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Today I was reading through a Google Wave public thread about the impact of technology on social change in which someone mentioned a group called The Extraordinaries. As a busy working college student who wants to help but doesn't always have the time, I really appreciate the effort these people are making, and I plan to try this out as soon as possible.

I think the concept of "micro-volunteering" is interesting. It relates to what I've been reading on this site about doing what you can with limited resources.

Some people don't have hours to spend volunteering. They may have an hour here and there, or even a half hour, or ten minutes. But sometimes it's hard to free up half a day to volunteer somewhere. Sometimes I don't know what time I'm going to have free a week ahead so I can make arrangements with a local non-profit.

The Extraordinaries group takes that into consideration, and makes it easy to help someone online, in just a half hour, or even ten minutes. Volunteer opportunities include helping to research grants for libraries and helping to find jobs for people who are unemployed.

I love this!

I liked that alot too. Its useful for there to be small opportunities. Even for folks who may expand their efforts after starting small... they would first need to start small.

I'm glad that you've brought up this interesting topic of 'micro volunteering'.....i reckon this could be a new way to collaborate specially when everyone seems hooked on skype. Do you see voice to text service like spinvox empowering time poor uni students even further?

I think it's definitely a time-saver, and time is a valuable resource when you're a working college student.

In a way, it could also make everyone a writer, and open up that form of communication to people who wouldn't otherwise use it. I know a lot of people who have interesting stories to tell or information to share who wouldn't (or couldn't) sit down for the length of time it takes to write them. This would make sharing experience much easier.

Wow, great initiative. Brings to mind a crowd sourcing project in Kenya called Txteagle by cellphone entrepreneur Nathan Eagle. Since 2006, Eagle has been enlisting cellphone users in Kenya to perform small text-based tasks in return for micro-payments, provide an important source of income to rural and low-income populations. Kenyans in the trial iclude taxi drivers and high school students who have already translated more than 15 local languages into English for Nokia, which will use the results to make phone menus.

Atlanta has a couple of one day volunteering events - including MLK day. You can call the group 'Hands on Atlanta' and they send folks out to volunteer at different sites. While not 'micro-volunteering' (which I like even more) it has a similar goal of getting people to at least do something with a little time.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
