I did a bit of research into food security and found some interesting data. According to the Maine Food Security Project (lead by the Good Shepherd Food-bank) 150,000 Maine residents face the risk of severe hunger. While that not may sound like much in the greater scheme of things Maine only have a population of around 1.3 million. Put simply, 11.4% of Maine's population is at risk for severe hunger. This isn't just mean they are missing a meal. This means they barely scrape by on little or no income. They have to choose between heating their home or eating. No one should be put in that situation. The data I found was from 2008 so it is likely that the current economic situation of the State has increased that number a bit.
Good Shepherd Food-Bank is Maine’s largest hunger relief organization. They distribute donated and purchased food to soup kitchens, food pantries and other partnering food relief efforts from Kittery to Fort Kent. Annually, over 10 million pounds of food pass through their warehouse operations to charitable partners statewide, helping to feed 70,000 individuals each month. According to data found at their website one dollar to Good Shepherd is multiplied into $12.50 worth of food for Maine’s hungry. That is a fantastic accomplishment.
I had never donated to them before, so I took this opportunity to donate $50. According to them this will feed a child for 3 months.
