A crash course in changing the world.
To help address food security in my city, I attended the orientation for volunteers at the Lowcountry Food Bank. A group of EVOKE agents from The Citadel will volunteer at the Lowcountry Food Bank warehouse during the first weekend of December.
The Lowcountry Food Bank serves as sort of a clearing house for a variety of agencies in my city that deliver food to households that are food insecure. The warehouse accepts foods donated from grocery stores, farmers, restaurants and other retailers in the area, checks to be sure they are good, and catalogs them so they can be delivered via other agencies.
The Lowcountry Food Bank warehouse also packs food for the "backpack" program. This program got started when local experts found that the public school "free lunch" program left a gap over the weekends. Many children do not eat from lunch time on Friday until lunch time on Monday. So, the Lowcountry Food Bank prepares 'backpacks' with food for the weekend to give these children before they leave school on Friday.
I will also be working with another group, for which I serve as faculty advisor, to organize a food drive to help collect donations for the Lowcountry Food Bank this January and February.
I have posted a picture of the flyer from the volunteer orientation under "evidence."
