I walked down to one of the local libraries to get some more books on wild foods (because I only had four already, and that simply wasn't enough! I really am a book-aholic, aren't I?), and scoped out the slim wild food pickings on the way there. I found a reasonable amount of the usual spring "cleansing tonic" greens (dock, dandelion, clover, etc.) periodically, so I know I won't starve, at least, and I should be extra healthy with all the tonic! :-)
I was surprised to find my favorite little wooded space at the American Academy of Arts And Sciences over near Harvard Square, in Cambridge, closed to the public. My guess was that they did this because part of the space was flooded with the record breaking spring rains we've had recently, and they are paranoid about people... I don't know...
doing something interesting in the water. But, having looked through the fence, it didn't look like I was going to miss much in the way of edible plants in there anyway, so it's not a great loss. It would have been convenient, as the place is just a few blocks from where I'm staying. But, it just means I get to explore further out for my meals.
I'm also planning on contacting several local wild foods experts, and some of the local sustainable living organizations, to let them know what I'm doing, and ask them if they have any tips and/or stories about eating local wild foods. It would be good to make some connections with other folks interested in eating locally and using nature's own grocery store to shop for dinner!
The classic sidewalk weed is also a little snack for me!
Hey, there's a swimming pool in my urban woods!
Some lovely clover lounging in a sweet mini woodland area covered with pine cones and needles next to the Cambridge Ringe and Latin school (and the library).
