A crash course in changing the world.

I never give much thought to this miss treatment of women. In my circles of friends and in my class in society I rarely hear about rape or the general degradation of women. I was just reading on the UN women watch site about the horrific things that women have to face. It really makes my stomach turn, and not even the tales of rape and genitalia discouragement but also the seemingly benign things like men taking credit for a women's labor. It all just makes me sick to my stomach.

Why do men attack women? Is it just to make us feel strong?

Fear.

That's where all violence comes from.

A fear of what though, loss of power? I don't care if women run the world, I don't care who runs the world I just want it run well.

Generally it's the fear that one won't be able to contribute good things to the world, which is the primary motivating factor of all of us animals. Procreation of some sort (genetic or memetic) is what we tend to spend all of our efforts on in life. And if someone feels like their ability to procreate is being threatened, they naturally fall into a fight-or-flight state to protect their real, or potential, offspring.

damn evolutionary baggage. Do you think as a species ever get beyond our biological impulses? Thinking about those who choose to be celibate, I know that some are able to.

we are all just really smart monkeys huh? I think that whenever I see someone trying to open a can for some reason.
Comment by Turil Cronburg on April 16, 2010 at 5:56pm
I hope we never get over the impulse to create newer, better things for the future (procreation)!

I don't think it is fear of comparative skills or intelligence, I think perhaps it is fear of accepting challenges to a previously established position of authority or superiority from a differently-packaged intellect. (NomadHAR and others have written about the corpus callosum and its role in inter-hemispheric brain functioning--whether or not a brain has more male or female attributes despite the gender of its "container" is a side issue, too.) Some species mate for life (geese, etc) and are reportedly celibate otherwise. "Pride" species (lions, large cattle, etc) tend to undertake many male-centered battles to establish hierarchy; in bee and, more specifically, ant colonies, hierarchies are established through female lines... @ Wintermute, since you brought up primates: Hierarchies are so important to concepts of retained power among yellow baboons, that if one male wants to approach a second male, the first will often carry an infant baboon as a neutralizing "passport" of safe conduct for day-to-day interactions (not mating season) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_Baboon maybe that is why societies compile laws and systems of justice, and inter-related global societies now are trying to establish gender equality in issues of human rights across national, cultural, religious, etc. barriers. It is a dynamic problem, and not always keyed to issues of procreation, but also stereotypes and habits. However, adrenaline responses aside, reasoned solutions to issues of appropriate equality can be found. The problem is finding a surrogate for mistaken feelings of power stemming from the oppression of another--whether in "civil" society, in mixed-gender relationships (or interdependent same-gender relationships, I suppose), or on the fields of battle (which seem to be another bastion of male domination and conflict)... Force is force, and inappropriate application stultifies communication, growth, freedom.

+1KS. I heard an intresting comment this week about empowering that African man. Violence against women has been on the rise in many countries in Africa and particuarly in my country Kenya. Wheather a child is born male or female is a most important fact is in all cultures. Gender remains the core of one's identity affecting all aspects of life both individually and socially. Men have also been profoundly affected by societal and cultural change and these changes in men's traditional roles have led to instability within societies.

why do some men that have power feel threatened by women? the idea of women in power goes against the misogynistic systems they have laid in place.

so how did these systems come to be? certain religions and cultures have been enforcing rules and stereotypes of women as a lower class for centuries.

so why are those men especially threatened by women? women are the life-givers in many ways; the true power of the world. some men are jealous of this power and seek to control it.

i also think that some people just have an inclination to discriminate against other people. they will use any excuse or rationalization they can get away with.

Yes, many people are taught to fear certain groups of "other". In fact, pretty much everyone has at least some fear of "other" to some extent, otherwise we'd be rolling around in piles of mold and eating poop. :-) It's just that if we want to help people be less afraid of others who aren't actually threatening them, then we have to work hard to nurture them, and help them feel more confident in their abilities to be the kinds of people they most want to be in life.

@ nomadHar I think also many men are scared of women sexuality. I feel so bad about the mixed messages that women in America and other places receive about their sexuality; Be sexy because that's what men want--but if you have sex with us, or you don't, or your dress/ act sexy your a slut and we don't respect you. Men are afraid of Pandora's box. I think that ties into trying to control the life-giving power.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
