In the IMAGINE mission for the first mission, I briefly described a meal - local fish and vegetables. With some work, these are easily things that I could obtain on my own.
In fact, when I was employed by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, we were allowed to take home fish we caught (We collect winter flounder for aging purposes. To determine a flounder's age, we remove two small bones in the head called otoliths, which are the fish's inner ear bones. Thus, the vast majority of the fish - and all of the tasty stuff - is undamaged. If the fish is over the legal size, we were allowed to take it home, so the meat wouldn't go to waste). And I found it very satisfying that the food I was putting on my plate was something that I had worked for.
As I've said before, overfishing is a problem, and adding to that, aquaculture is often not the best solution. Minimizing tangents here...in 10 years, can a person still head out and catch fish for dinner? I can't imagine growing one's own vegetables would be a problem, but catching one's own fish might be.
I'm ok with eating simple foods. I don't need big, complicated meals. Some sort of protein, some plant material, some carbs - not each one at every meal, but 2/3 each time. It's just a matter of these products still being accessible. I like to think that food insecurity will come for 33 year old me later than the rest of the world, and to be honest, there's probably a fair share of truth in that. I have more resources available and more of a buffer system against hunger here than in other parts of the world. Such problems can certainly work their way through the buffer, with some products more likely to be in danger than others. Since I've been living on my own and doing my own grocery shopping, I've noticed signs telling customers about food shortages. These range from Eggo Waffles (really people, we get upset about fake waffle shortages?) to fruit that has been affected by the climate.
I'm not sure if I've just never paid attention to these signs before because my mother would do the grocery shopping and so they appear to be increasing in frequency, or they actually are increasing in frequency. I'm going to guess the latter. And I expect such things will continue to get worse.
