Open Source Seed Banks?

Just reading up on Mission 2 and already my brain is humming. I just watched Food Inc. a couple of weeks ago and now, after reading the Time article on future food shortages, http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1870766,00.html

I am struck by another Urgent Evoke!!!!!! Food Inc taught me about Monsanto and the monopoly they have on genetically modified seed and I shudder to think that they are already in place to control the seed supply. Because of this all too likely inevitability, I am researching "Seed Banks" for urban gardners.

After reading about survival seed banks - I think this idea would be a good foundation for an urban garden as well. The goal for a sustainable garden would be to use seed that is non-hybrid and open pollinated so that the seeds from the vegetables/fruits can be collected and used the next year.

Survival Seed Bank is a small box that contains anywhere from 20-30 differentvegetable varieties of seeds, depending from manufacturer. Each seed bank has few hundreds to few thousands seeds of each vegetable packed into a paper or plastic bags. These small bags are then put into a plastic or metal container which makes the survival seed bank.

All the survival seeds are non hybrid and open pollinated, because you can collect seeds from vegetables grown from non hybrid seeds. Thus, you buy your survival seed bank, grow vegetables, save the seeds from the vegetables and can continue to grow vegetables the next year.

Survival seeds in Survival Seed Banks are hand picked for their hardiness, nutritional value, germination rate and of course, storage life.

In every survival seed bank, beyond the seeds, you will find helpful information about growing and harvesting vegetables and instructions for storing seeds. This is a very important step that needs to be done properly, because failing to store the seeds in the right way could mean that you won’t have enough seeds to plant the following year.

In case of some climate disaster like flood or economic crises, the ability to grow your own food could be the only way for long term survival for you and your family. It the food supply runs out and there is no way to fill it again, planting a Survival Garden and using survival seeds will be the best solution.

This post will be used to research and log "Open Source" ie; open pollinated and heirloom seed producers who are providing seed at a reasonable (non-disaster ecomnomy) price. The list will be added to as I continue my research.

ABCeeds - This is a wonderful site with a great deal of teaching for beginners!

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development.The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
