A crash course in changing the world.
I just saw a photo by TJ Roshan on a human-powered dynamo. One that generates electricity by walking: http://www.urgentevoke.com/photo/human-dynamo-how-energy-from-1?xg_...
This got me thinking... what if you could scale that idea back even further? A pedometer that generates electricty just by walking, through linear induction -- like a "shakey flashlight"?
It would be simple. A shaft inside the pedometer around which thin copper wire is wound. Then a spherical rare earth magnet is placed in the shaft and slightly oiled, like a bearing. With every move, the magnet slides up and down the shaft (or, perhaps, side-to-side would be easier to manage), generating a miniscule amount of energy. Attach that to a small battery pack either attached to the pedometer itself, or slipped into a back pocket (or the entire device into a purse), and voila. Human power through a tamagotchi-sized device.
The details for building your own shakelight, here: http://www.electroniccrafts.org/?n=Main.Shakelight (in case someone wants to either do this, or modify it for the pedogenerator.)
