Protection from Flooding of the Rhine river

I think the most imminent danger for the town I live is the flooding of the Rhine river.

There were four big floodings during the 90ies ... the worst being in January 1995.
Lucky for me, I didn't live here by that time.
The fact that there were no big floodings during the last decade seems to suggest that there will be no more, but it's probably just that the authorities have learned to handle the situation better.

The Rhine Atlas (http://www.iksr.org/index.php?id=212&L=3&cHash=455fdab52c) gives a map of possible floodings.
The thing I am most concerned about is the public transport system. They already have trouble when there is too much snow each winter, well ... maybe they are better prepared for floodings.
I am probably not directly endangered as I live a bit above ground and on the side that is less endangered.

I would need the following info from a network like Ushahidi:

What streets and roads are passable?
Do busses go and where?
Is there damage to any house? Are people hurt?
Where can people endangered find a shelter?
Is electricity still working?
Where are hospitals?

Good summary, Oliver. I wouldn't assume, though, that the danger of flooding is past. This article on the causes of the Rhine Floods suggests that the natural and human causes are the same as elsewhere. I don't think any of those causes has disappeared since the 90's-- and in fact, there have been many catastrophic floods on other European rivers since then. The European Union issued a directive in 2007 requiring EU countries to do a****sments of the risks, but things like global warming, watershed destruction, hydroelectric power plants are with us I'm afraid catastrophic floods will be as well.

@Agent Iyamuremye : Yes, maybe I can offer them shelter for a few nights?

@Agent Sarah : Thanks ... also for the link to the directive.

Though not related to flooding, how have you guys been affected by the smoke from Eyjafjallajokull?

@Paul: Yes, we had a blue sky like never before for one weekend. ;)

Actually, I was lucky I didn't have to fly during that time. A friend of mine wanted to fly from Vienna to Cologne and had to take a train instead (12 hours each route) ... pretty hard for just one weekend.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
