Or: "I'm not in love with the modern world."
Farming initiatives in Detroit, Michigan, and, maybe, surrounding counties.
Detroit is in the center of what
this report calls a food desert. That is one S. This isn't a blissful post meal confectionery, this is an arid, inhospitable place. according to the report, there have been two major findings in the past few years:
First, health problems in America’s low-income communities generally are
substantially and persistently more severe than they are in the
rest of the nation. Second, poor nutrition is a major contributor
to that outcome.
Also according to the report, 92% of all food retail is from "Fringe Retailers," IE: gas stations, liquor and party stores. These retailers are not equipped, and have no incentive, to sell fresh fruits or vegetables to their customers.
Fortunately, Detroit residents are waking up to the physical, mental and monetary ruin that fringe retail food brings. With groups like
Urban Farming . org based in Detroit, as well as
multiple community farming projects, I think Detroit, and Michigan as a wh***, are on the edge of a wonderful resurgence of sustainable, local food growth.
