Ripple monetary system
Ripple is an open source protocol for a decentralized payment network. It is still largly in development. It uses the existing basis in real world social networks to create money out of social capital.
Looked like a good idea last time I looked at it.
One of it's strong sides is that the general bookkeeping is handled automatically by the computer that hosts the system, so the burnout factor for staff should be much lower than a usual LETS implementation.

This idea has enormous potential. Rather than rely on an institution to tell you how much they are prepared to lend based upon a limited subset of your assets, you have the potential for someone close to you recognise (trust) that a larger set of your capabilities gives them confidence in your future ability to meet an obligation if they grant you something now. The beauty is that the way it could be used is right down at the individuals who make this exchange, not in some distant regulated inflexible headquarters.

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
