Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Will challenge myself today, now, this Saturday night.

Armed with an old videocamera (to prove you don't need a HD camera), I will go to central Oslo, on this Saturday night, and talk with people. Start conversations with total strangers, about some of the topics here.

I will spend the night out, in Oslo, and not go back home before tomorrow morning. I will Definitely feel the cold. I will talk with some of the homeless people I meet. I will sit with them. Ask them questions. Ask if I can ask them questions on camera. (Have you seen Homeless Nation, btw?)

I actually prefer to Not do this. Stay at home. Watch a movie. Talk with the gf. But I have to challenge myself a bit, now and then.

So here is my first SC:

* Go to your city
* Talk with strangers about things mentioned here on EVOKE
* Take pictures of/with them, or - better yet: video (Of course with their permission and their permission to use it online)
* Share their story, and your own experiences from this challenge, on a blog entry here on EVOKE.

So, instead of challenging you guys, I will start by doing this myself.

Brrrr (yes, it's cold in Oslo. Give me spring!)

Wow, I can't wait to hear about what happens! This is what most excited me about Evoke - how this platform can leverage actions in the real world. For various reasons I can't join you in this particular challenge, but please keep the ideas coming!

Ok, i am online again, at a internet cafe at the central station in Oslo.

WoW. I met this guy, Kenny, who has been a heroine addict for 12 years. Spent most of the night talking with him, following him. How he sells magazines, how he sits and begs for money, all for his next shot.

We talked about his shame, his shame sitting there begging, or selling magazines. How he still feels that "This is much better than doing crime".

We also talked about many other things, and I shot some video with him. He is simply happy that someone cares to listen. Not just listen, by some automatic sense of 'sympathy', but Really listens. Who also dares to ask some of those tough questions.

After I get home in some hours, I will edit the video together, and post it along with my report.

Raymond - whose fingers are still thawing :)

Wow, Raymond, that sounds like an amazing experience.

It's likely that Kenny already knows about resources around Oslo (and maybe you too!), but if not I would highly recommend looking into a needle exchange program. Here in the States NEP is still REALLY controversial, and although I think your county's health systems are a lot more supportive of the concept, I don't have a good sense of how much public awareness there is about them.

I really like needle exchange because it's based out of a harm reduction framework which is very nonjudgmental and seeks to "meet people where they are." Good NEP's can also act as a gateway to other services, like mental health care which is so often a confounding factor with drug use. And that's on top of providing clean needles and oftentimes overdose preventative services (in the form of education or oftentimes a drug that can reverse overdoses). Basically, they can - and do - change and save lives.

If you need any help researching or finding any health-related resources, please let me know as I'm happy to help in any way I can.

It goes without saying that I can't being to imagine the power in just having someone to talk to. I'm sure that made a difference to Kenny. I just also hope he also has the information he needs to make informed choices about his health. What he does with those choices is, of course, up to him.

Thanks for sharing!

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development.The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
