Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

I figured out about videoblogging in December 2004. I belong not quite to the first wave of videobloggers, but almost. Weeks after I figured out about the ability to share videos online for the wh*** world to see, I flew to NYC in January 2005 to attend the world's first videoblogging conference, VloggerCon. VloggerCon was amazing - you should check out some of the sessions from the link.

The issues facing us in 2004 were quite different from our issues today. Back then, for instance, bandwidth was a real problem. "Oh no! 5000 people ended up visiting my site to watch my video! My ISP is going to send a huge bill!".

We had tons of discussions in the community of how videoblogging could change the world. How everyone from a teenager in India to a NGO based in California could use videoblogging to share stories, show examples, and so on.

YouTube launched in mid 2005, and we were psyched that Youtube, Vimeo, blip.tv, and later tons of other hosts were popping up, all allowing users to upload videos for free.

And before we knew it, Youtube was 'the big thing'. We were thrilled, of course.

In September 2005, after the end of the Parliamentary elections in Norway where I had done some work (well, mostly pilot work) with videoblogging during elections, we had VlogEurope, which was the first conference in Europe for videobloggers.(Btw, I am still co-organizing VlogEurope, and this year's VE will be held in Portugal)

Here is a video with moments from that VlogEurope 2005 conference:

Amsterdam Moments 2005 #2 from dltq on Vimeo.

The conference was not big or commercial, it was basically the meeting of people (artists, journalists, tech-heads) who were interested in this new thing.

One of the discussions we had was: How do we make sure that the videos we capture now are available for our grand-children?

That question still is valid today, five years later. How are we guaranteed that the video we upload to Youtube will be available in 20 years? We aren't. Of course, there are other alternatives, and actually during the spring of 2005 I was also involved with OurMedia (collaborating with the great people Marc Canter and J.D. Lasica, among others) and back then OurMedia had an agreement with The Internet Archive, meaning that we got a much better 'guarantee' that the files would stay up for generations to come. That was amazing!

But you never know. Things change. Organizations change. The challenges of 2005 are still here today, in 2010.

It's funny how the world evolves, and yet doesn't. The core questions are often invisible, hiding under all the huff and puff of hyped technologies.

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
