A crash course in changing the world.
Driving to work this morning along the very bery busy Langata Road in Nairobi I heard the story of Evans Wadongo. Instead of brewing moonshine - as many freshmen in Kenya are wont to do - Evans started working on a solar lantern while in university.
In true Kenyan style Evan's family and friends subsidized his student loans for two years as he worked on perfecting the solar lantern named Mwangaza Bora (a swahili word which roughly traslated means "good light").
Evans linked up with a non-profit and together they have reduced the cost of producing this solar lantern to US$20. The lantern is built by volunteers who receive a small percent of the US$20. They are working to bring the cost down from US$20. So far Evans has distributed10,000 lanterns free. Evans hope his invention will ultimately improve education and reduce poverty and hunger. Evans is 23 years old.
Looking at this remarkable achievment, I see many of the the secrets of social innovation - relevance, cost effectiveness, consultation, collaboration - in practical use. Evans has been voted a CNN Hero - Kudos Evans!
