In 2020, when I received the call from Alchemy, I was already busy working towards a better future. I was in a room with fifteen incredibly intelligent children from all walks of life who were the latest group selected as forward-thinking individuals to use divination games to discover solutions to problems. Just as the toy store Ouija board is used seriously by some to solemnly attempt contact with the deceased, tarot cards (copyright US Games) have been used for hundreds of years in very real problem-solving contexts for individuals.
These very special students are receiving free training, thanks to a grant I received, in order to learn the thinking techniques required to use these types of tools. Rather than using them to solve an individual's love or career problem, they will eventually be able to turn their eyes to the community and innovate for large corporations, organizations and regions.
Understanding the task from alchemy, I gently interrupted the activities of the class, as students murmured in concentration working on the last task I had given them. "Class, we have a new issue to work on" I said, carefully. "So, turn in your suggestion sheets to the last student who asked for help with his neighbourhood problem, and let's all thank him for giving us the chance to empower him with this." I pulled Suleban's problem description off of the doc**ent camera and began to write down the next issue at hand, "The Tokyo Food Crisis."
Upon explaining it to the students, the room once again dissolved into calm collaboration. I heard a gasp from one of the more shy students near the back of the room, who trembling, raised her hand. "Yes, Nadya?" I approached her warmly, hoping that she would be brave enough to share this time. "You'll never believe the solution I just found," she said quietly, "but it just might work!"
