Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Fellow gamers,

I believe that EVOKE is simply a means of disseminating knowledge about how to provide basic services that have the potential to improve world - dressed up as a game to stimulate participation. I believe it was created in a spirit of altruism, that is, the out of unselfish concern for or devotion to the welfare of others.

Some gamers have taken it upon themselves to add a level of critical analysis to the game. An excellent example of this is A.V. Koshy's post THE FIRST ONE IN A SERIES OF METACOGNITIONAL ESSAYS ON EVOKE. These posts probe the overarching political and societal issues and are very successful at identify the weak spots in the structure of the game. I welcome this discourse (as should the organizers) and absorb as much as I can in my limited time on EVOKE.

However, I think there is an alternative discourse. Ideologically, this game seems to borrow heavily from Buckminster Fuller. To Illustrate what I mean, I'll offer a short commentary on five quotes by Bucky:

1) "How can we make the world work for 100 percent of humanity in the shortest possible time through spontaneous cooperation without ecological damage or disadvantage to anyone?"
This is the central theme of the game. We we achieve it? Not here. Is it overly ambitions? Yes. Should we work toward it anyway? Yes.

2) "Be naive."

I believe that in spite of the overwhelming scale of the challenges we face, the damage already done, the shadowy and insidious agents controlling society, and lack of capital I can make a difference.

3) "Don't fight forces, use them. OR You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, you build a new model that makes the old model obsolete."

There are many people on EVOKE who are suspicious of the World Bank. Nevertheless, they have a lot of power and I don't mind taking their money and putting it to good use. Multi-national corporations also have a dubious reputation. But they also have a lot of power, and if they start making responsible decisions they can have tremendous positive influence. We can help them make better decisions.

4) "You can't make the world better just by talking to it. Philosophy to be effective must be mechanically applied."

We all want to help. That is why we are here playing this game. Sharing information is a great first step, but we as a EVOKE community have to work together to figure out how to evolve ideas into action. The organizers are promising to lend a hand through the May 12 Evokation, but I am confident we will see examples of this happening before then.

5) "When an individual joins a cooperative venture, the power generated far excedes what they could have accomplished acting individually."

EVOKE is about forging relationships to affect change. If you are creative, find someone with knowledge, someone else with local insight, someone else with a vision for how achieve it and GET SOMETHING DONE.

+1 for courage to articulate your thoughts and putting them down in this great post. A lot of learning for me personally. totally agreed when you said "EVOKE is about forging relationships"

David-- Wonderful quotes from Bucky Fuller, delightfully applied to the game! Kudos!

@ R&S, thanks for the kind words.

@ Koshy, I'll take 80% agreement! Seriously, I get all your points regarding #3, but am willing to apply a little #2 (no pun intended) to try and spark something. If you think an mnc will treat me as an equal partner, but you as a subsidiary, how would they treat US if we were a team?
Comment by David Dewane on March 30, 2010 at 10:45pm
I'd still take the partnership, because judging by the economic trajectories of American and Indian credit pretty soon it will be you with 100%, me with 50%...borrowing from an Indian mnc.
I don't want to make light of your opinions because we have two different life experiences. I take enjoy your posts immensely and am learning a great deal from them.

I am puzzled about your generalizations regarding India. It seems like now would be a good time to be an optimistic about the future of India, yet you seem unconvinced.

"To change something, you build a new model that makes the old model obsolete."

This is called evolution! Spend your time making something better than what already exists, and you're all set. :-)

I like this- definitely food for thought and a good way to focus on the possible now versus the possible later.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
