A crash course in changing the world.
When considering crisis that have and may unfold in my community, I recognize the threats posed by hurricanes and tornados. Both weather systems have destructive effects that can be seen across both the state of South Carolina and the Southeast region of the United States. In terms of where I live, I feel that Charleston is at most risk for the possibility of a hurricane. In Charleston's history, several hurricanes have ripped through its beautiful coast line and destroyed multiple locations which have taken years to repair. One notable instance that some from the region can recall was Hurricane Hugo. Hugo, which came ashore with fierce winds, destroyed multiple parts of Charleston leaving some with severe damages in what some are calling the worst hurricane to ever have attacked the city.
If a crisis like this were to take place again, I would utilize several functions offered by the Ushahidi program. Such services would include: stranded people locators, medical supply locators, travel routes to help evacuate lavished areas, clean and processed water stations, and much more. This information could better help me to locate those injured or in need of rescue. Additionally, it would help me to better provide individuals in the path left by the hurricane with the needed resources to help themselves until the Army National Guard or Coast Guard could arrive.
