I'm not an engineer, but I think a simple thermoelectric device could be installed on my motorcycle exhaust that would deliver enough power from waste heat to run my onboard GPS system.
The basic design of a thermoelectric device is as follows:
My design would be to install the generators on the heat shield of the exhaust with a cooling fin/heat sink on the exposed side of the generators. This should create a temperature differential wide enough to generate sufficient power.
The system would have the following setup: THG-->Charge Controller (to prevent battery drain back into the generator)-->Removable Storage Battery
Part of the design spec here is the removable storage battery that will power the GPS unit. This portable battery could be removed and used to charge cell phones or other small electronic devices if necessary.
