A crash course in changing the world.
I read in the'Braunschweiger Zeitung' that Brunswick is one of the most popular cities in Germany regarding to living standards and comforting atmosphere. Especially Brunswick got positive features for cityscape, cleanliness and safety in a representative EU-citizens' consultation 'Urban Audit'. Summarized this survey highlights that Brunswick is a city in which its inhabitants feel good and comfortable. Only Constance, Fribourg, Munich and Nuremberg are a little further on that ranking. This result is also attractive to tourists. In this connection I encountered a very interesting project for the town centre of Brunswick. The project is called'Vernetztes Gedächtnis'. Places, people, stories and memories are integrated into a network to result an open dialogue about history. The central idea is that an historical age can be found in various locations around the city. For this historical connections should be discovered, exposed, doc**ented and explained. By marking and labeling the historic places the idea of 'Vernetzes Gedächtnis' should be transferred to the cityscape. The target is not to codify history with boards or signage. The aim is rather to make the current, real urban space as a space for dialogue with the past.
For me especially the tension between new buildings and the historic heritage of locations is very attractive. I think it is certainly a good idea to involve the past into the current cityscape.
