A crash course in changing the world.
I live in Nuremberg, Bavaria. Which crisis could we face in the future? We don't live in an earthquake-prone area and there is no foot-shortage foreseeable. We seem to live in a quite save area where a political crisis unlikely in the near future. So which crisis could happen here? Maybe a terrorist attack? Nuremberg is a very attractive city for tourists. Especially in the winter months there are thousands of tourists visiting the city and the famous "Christkindles Markt". This might be a possible target for terrorists.
In case of a terrorist outrage there would spread panic instantly. Probably there would be many dead people and many injured persons who need quick help. Very likely the mobile network would brake down soon as many people would try to reach emergency service, relatives and friends.
I think in case of such a crisis the most important data to track is where to find injured and dead people. Ushahidi could help to share information about where the people who need help are located and how to reach them. If there are destroyed or contaminated routes which are not to be used this information could be updated and shared on the Ushahidi platform. In such a situation many persons will panic, so it’s important to give information about the circ**stances of the crisis. Ushahidi could also be helpful to organize help of volunteers. If there is a series of attacks in a short sequence Ushahidi could be used to warn people about the possible location of the next outrage. If the power supply or the water system are affected, Ushahidi could be helpful to coordinate the emergency supply. Also the platform could inform people who can move self-dependently about where to find help in form of first aid facilities or emergency accommodations.
Before accepting this mission, I didn’t know anything about Ushahidi. I think this could be a very important tool to manage a crisis.
