The future of EVOKE - What I would like the next Season to look like

Most of the topics we dealt with in this season of EVOKE are permanently important. That’s why I suggest repeating those topics in season 2. But there are a few topics which I would add. I think issues concerning conflicts should be considered more next time. There should be at least one or two episodes regarding the management of conflicts like wars, clash between cultures and civil wars.

Another extremely important subject we have to consider in the future is nuclear energy. Although…

How do People react in a Pandemic?

What I found really surprising is the statement of Peter Sandman, Risk Communication Consultant. He says that if people become aware of a risk, denial is a way bigger problem than panic. To be honest, I always thought that overreactions to a difficult situation and the panic of the people can cause the biggest problems. What Peter Sandman says is that the overreactions and fear in a crisis are very important to protect people. Sandman argues that people who have gone through such a reaction…

A communication platform for people in need and voluntary civilians

If a pandemic flu would reach Nuremberg and I would have been asked to organize a group of people who can help, I would create an online platform for the communication between voluntary helpers and people who are in need of them.

If a pandemic flu begins to spread over a community or a country it is important try to keep the number of new infections to a minimum. But there is one problem: Infected people still need to leave their homes in order to get food, medicine and other important…

COMMUNITY-BASED ECOTOURISM VENTURE: THE CASE OF SUNUNGUKAI CAMP, ZIMBABWE

COMMUNITY-BASED ECOTOURISM VENTURE: THE CASE OF SUNUNGUKAI CAMP, ZIMBABWE

This case study is about the Sunungukai Camp, an ecotourism project managed by a small community of some 250 households in five rural villages.

These are the major points of the case study:

"The initial situation:

Prior to the start of the project, access to and use of natural resources in the Communal Lands of the Mazowe River Basin was unrestricted. This led to a serious degradation of the…

The children of today - the year 2090

This is a message for you out there:

It’s the year 2090. I am a 100-year-old mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. I’ve seen the world changing over the past decades and I am beginning to worry about the future of this world. There has changed a lot: The people have changed, their environment has changed. When I am thinking back of my childhood I see nature. I see my friends and me playing outside, in the wood, in the meadow, in the sun and in the rain. We had us and our…

City Map of Nuremberg in the year 2020

In my imagination, Nuremberg will be close to be a carbon-neutral city in 2020. I designed a map in which I integrated several changes which Nuremberg could reached in 2020 to be more sustainable for the future. It's not perfect yet. I could spend days and weeks with thinking of more and more features of the future design of Nuremberg. But you can already check my map out on the following link:…

Ushahidi - Helps to handle a terrorist attack on the Christkindles Markt in Nuremberg

I live in Nuremberg, Bavaria. Which crisis could we face in the future? We don't live in an earthquake-prone area and there is no foot-shortage foreseeable. We seem to live in a quite save area where a political crisis unlikely in the near future. So which crisis could happen here? Maybe a terrorist attack? Nuremberg is a very attractive city for tourists. Especially in the winter months there are thousands of tourists visiting the city and the famous "Christkindles Markt". This might be a…

From poor rural women to successful business managers

I chose an article titled: "India: Transforming poor rural women into successful business managers". It describes the very successful project “Swaayam”. “Swaayam” is an UN Development Programme (UNDP)-IKEA Foundation pilot initiative. The goal of the programme is to empower women socially, economically and politically. To achieve this goal the women get trainings on financial literacy and business management. This strategy works so well that up until now there are 12,000 financially literate…

Paying via mobile phone

I read some articles about the NFC-technology (NFC = Near Field Communication) and I think it's a possible scenario that in a few decade there is no more cash and everyone will pay with their mobile phones.

How does it work: To pay for example in a supermarket or in the train you need a smart phone equipped with the NFC-technology. You pay by holding your mobile phone in front of a NFC-capable paying terminal. You have to enter a PIN and the money is charged from your bank-account. In…

Collecting Rainwater on a Finca in Spain

More than 16 years ago my uncle emigrated to Spain. He is now living on a big finca (estate/ parcel of land) together with his family, friends and animals. They are trying to find a harmonic way of living in nature. When I read this week's mission, I instantly thought of Jochen, a friend of my uncle who is living on this "farm" since a few years. Last year he had the idea of creating a system of hollows where he wants to save rainwater. With the collected water they want to supply the…

Alexandre Marciel - Creating Energy with every Footstep

This week I would like to introduce you to Alexandre Marciel. He is the deputy mayor of Toulouse in France. He thinks that a city can not only consume electricity. In fact Marciel thinks that a city is able to produce energy with the aid of the people who live there. His idea is to use the kinetic energy of thousands of pedestrians who walk through the streets of Toulouse every day. His project "Trott Elec" is inspired by a club in Holland where the dancers produce the power for the lighting…

Act 3 - Generating Power in Gyms

Act%203.pdf

My friend Teresa and I thought about where in our daily life we could produce energy. Today we went to a fitness centre to sign in and there we had the idea: generating energy while exercising! In gyms people spent hours trying to burn up as many calories as possible. Why not saving this kinetic energy and using it to produce electricity? Back home we began our…

Food Security

I am from Germany. At the moment, we don't have an actual food security problem here. As many other Evoke Members already mentioned in their blog posts we rather have a food waisting throwaway society than a food shortage. But as we all now, we should not only look at one little piece of the puzzle but regard the wh*** issue.

I think it is time to think about what WE can do HERE to prevent future food shortages, not only in Germany or Europe, but EVERYWHERE else. The biggest threat for…

LEARN1

My favourite secret is "Understand". Understanding the problem is the first step to finding a good and reasonable solution. If you don't understand the environment, infrastructure, culture and lives of people you won't be able to find a working solution which will be accepted by the affected people. Many people come up with great ideas, not only in matters of "making the world a better place" but also with simple products. But they will never be successfull if they don't understand what…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
