A crash course in changing the world.
The usage of the power of the ocean is becoming more an more important, because of its big theoretical potential. There were built several test facicities worldwide in which the alternative concepts of earning energy from the ocean. At the moment there are two different approaches of realizing this. One is the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion in which the temperature diffenrence between cold and warm water is used. There is a difference of about 20 degrees between the water on the top of the sea and the bottom, which can be used to exhaust energy. In general this is only possible at a few places of the world, where the sea is deep enaugh. The big advantage of this approach is the continuous supply of energy, independant from the daytime. The disadvantages are the low effictiveness compared to other solutions and the potential ecological consequences for the sea.
the second approach is using the diffenrent salt content of sea water and fresh water. It is using the principle of osmosis in which these two kinds of water are devided by a membrane. The fresh water pa**** the membrane to the sea water side an in this way of the freah water side a pressure arises. This Pressure boosts a turbine which finally delivers the energy. This approach is an early phase of developement, so they are not yet very effevtive.
In my opinion it is absolutelly important to focus especially on these two approaches, beacause it is independant from daytime and the second one even nearly independant from geographical factors. Anywhere wehre a river enters the sea, it is potentially possible to built such a power plant.
