A crash course in changing the world.
In particular, everyone needs to be aware that the population explosion is ending - growth has been slowing since 1980, and the population will peak at about 9-10 billion by 2050. Most of the world is rapidly moving towards having 2-child families with average life expectancy over 60.
Culture is part of this. It is part of the reason why population continues to rise even as we are slowing our growth, because culture dictates how many children people will tend to have. We used to have much higher death rates of children, and consequently, we have had a cultural habit (if not a biological one) of making as many children as we can. That culture is changing, and we can maybe speed it along by transforming the perception of how many children will survive into how many we give birth to, since most will now survive.
This video, "No more boring data", is the first I saw of Rosling, and it was quite inspiring. I found it when I was looking for population data and I subsequently wrote a rather long blog on the subject: World Population is Stabilizing.
