This was a hard choice for me. Haiti is near and dear to my heart, so every time I saw an update with Haiti involved I had to fight from clicking the link. However, what kept capturing my attention was the article about
Human Trafficking in Egypt. I couldn't get away from the article - so I ended up reading it. Human trafficking is what I've chosen to
dig deep and research, so this fits. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, UN reporter on trafficking, recently took a 10 day "fact finding" trip to Egypt. Her conclusion was satisfaction on measures taken to inhibit women being trafficked. She mentions in the article a new law
just passed making it illegal to harvest organs. However, the interview touches on something I am deeply concerned about: validity of information within trafficking research.
For those not familiar with trafficking rings, this is a black market op only beat by drug cartels. In 2009, human traffickers made more money than Nike, Google and Starbucks -
combined. This is not an organizational structure made blatant. Even in Moldova - the center of trafficking according to most people - where there are cafes specifically designed for trafficking victims, secrecy is paramount and safety is of concern for those who find out what truly happens. I don't believe there's any way to truly know how many are trafficked - and this is alarming, considering the numbers are upwards of 27 million for modern day slavery.
After reading this article, I favorited the site, hoping to continue researching the effects of trafficking within Egypt and what someone in the US could logically do in order to help those still caught in its trap. I believe Ezeilo has nothing but positive intentions - I just don't think her trip truly uncovered as many facts as she believes. And she even admits this: "There is absence of accurate data on trafficking in persons, especially
women and children which has made it impossible to measure the magnitude
or scale of human trafficking in Egypt." If this is true, how can she truly be satisfied with the improvements made? I intend to dive deep and research as much as possible through
IJM and other organizations fighting human trafficking.
