Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

1. Typos scattered around, including in the text of the second quest:
Who or what you really care about? Try to analyze your “big day” for at least three things it reveals about
what really motivates you.
(The word DO is missing...)

2. Blocky interface--important indicators like your inbox, your pointscore, new posts, and new comments, are all scattered around in different spots, and all quite small compared to various banners.

3. A URL typo in the mass email for the week 3 update. So every player gets a "server not found" error...

These aren't complaints, just observations. At the moment, the lack of polish gives me more faith that this game isn't just a credibility whitewash for the World Bank...

I'd love to know more about the people 'behind the curtain'. In the first week there was a major shift in how missions were checked off; it seemed as if there were no longer 'first responders' manually signing off posts but an automatic checkoff when things were added to an evidence log. I'm wondering if there just isn't that much man-power behind the scenes or that they are overwhelmed by the community involvement. In any case, I'd love to see a post-mortem on how this 'game' was carried out.

Jane McGonigal has a lot of public info out there (and a great track record too).

I think a lot of IFTF people are involved as well:

Right - Jane McGonigal did a mini-press junket to raise awareness leading up to this (CNN, GDC, etc). I'd love to know the nuts and bolts bits - how many people are scanning posts? How many are involved with maintaining backend infastructure? When the servers were throwing errors on the first weekend what was the cause of the problems?

That kind of stuff fascinates me. If Evoke were real just how many people would Alchemy have in his IT department? ;)

Try Nathan Verrill for that info:

Just as a guess...

Jake, thanks for the feedback and sorry about the typos, doh! ;-) I'd describe the game running team as a mix of pros, semi-pros and volunteer amateurs, and 'earnest' is an attribute that applies to all concerned. As far as the WB, check out this post http://blog.urgentevoke.net/2010/03/09/who-created-evoke-and-why/ for more on the World Bank Institute, who are generally not at the center of the controversial stuff.

Matthew, the first few days were eye-opening around here. The incredible rate of signups and player engagement created a vast river of evidence, and the manual review process had no hope of keeping up, so it was changed to make it a better experience for players. Thanks for hanging in there with us!

BTW, who says EVOKE isn't real? Just look at some of the things agents are out there doing in the real world...maybe TINAG after all.

Thanks for the reply, Gene, and for all the work you behind-the-scene folks are doing.
I don't mind the typos; they suggest that this project is being run by designers and developers, not PR folks.
The WBI is, as you say, pretty non-controversial, but the World Bank itself is, well, pretty controversial in a lot of ways. But that's no problem for me; I'm very much in favor of collaboratively engaging organizations/people that I don't see eye to eye with.

I hope you all are keeping journals of what this is like on the back-end. I'd really like to read about it from your perspectives someday!

If you think of EVOKE as a classroom with more than 10,000 students, it's actually going pretty well for the most part. I was really impressed with the quick response to the initial problem of too much evidence (where the game creators added a mechanism for players to check off their own evidence). It was pretty disappointing to log in day after day and have my runes not be lit up because no one had time to review my earnest efforts -- not the "epic win" feeling you want from a game -- but I don't mind at all being able to check them off myself. The ability to make that kind of mid-stream adjustment is crucial for a game/experiment of these proportions.

Thanks for the replies Gene! It's true what you said about the relationships on Evoke; they are as real as the conversations I had with my kids after getting up this morning. I was referring to the fictional narrative accompanying the network to spur discussion and provide focus.

Ninmah, that's a point very well made.
And for a huge classroom like that, it seems like the students are very well behaved, so far!

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
