Being from a fairly affluent area of England, I was pretty convinced that I wouldn't find much on the web about food security in my local area. It turns out I was wrong. Here in the fringes of London, tower blocks and concrete are thriving but local food production is pretty much non-existent. This is particularly true of Croydon, a fairly notorious London borough that's right on my doorstep.
What I found interesting was that "Making Local Food Work", a lottery sponsored initiative, has been encouraging Croydon as well as several other areas across the country to produce more local food. Even more interesting is the fact that they offer funding for anyone within England wanting to set up a local food business.
One thing that struck me in particular is that although England is generally very secure in terms of food, this is largely down to the fact that much/most of it is imported. If we start learning to provide for ourselves then maybe eventually we can stop draining the rest of the world of its produce.
This is one I'm planning on coming back to at some point. Still, food for thought. (Excuse the dreadful pun).
