Gender Parity in Politics to Strength Democracy in my Country

I chose to investigate on the gender parity subject because the news that "75% of Latin American Opinion Leaders Believe Gender Parity in Politics Strengthens Democracy" caught my attention.

On an international level, gender parity has been stated on different conventions, protocols and laws; the most important are:

  • The Convention on the Political Rights of Women (UN)
  • The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights(UN)
  • The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (UN)

Here in Mexico, the Federal Code of Institutions and Electoral Procedures (COFIPE) was created in 1990, but it was until 2002 that it was reformed to obligate the political parties to have at least 30% of women in the electoral campaigns compiting. And it was until 2008 that the percentage was raise up to 40%.[1]

But a recent study made by the Study Center for the Advancement of Women and Gender Equity (CEAMEG), in the Chamber of Deputies of the Mexican Congress, revealed that the political participation of women is limited, not even 30% of the seats are occupied by women.

Now, every state has its own electoral laws, an the obligatory percentage per states ranges from 30% to 50% (but only 7 of 31 states has the 50% quota) [1]

The gender parity in my country recently became news on the media. I remember watching the recent election of deputies that will represent us at the Chamber of Deputies. In the legislative campaign most of the women took the "alternate candidacies deputies" to fulfill gender quotas. Other women registered as candidates and when they won the election they promptly gave notice of their resignation in the first session held at the Chamber of Deputies. They did it so that the alternate deputies who ran with them, all male, could assume their positions[2]

This tell us that political parties are allowing discriminatory practices and women party members are accepting them.

Women should not agree to this and the law should be modified to stop things like this from happening . Political parties who try to bypass the legislation regarding gender parity should be sanctioned.

That's sobering news, that the laws pressing for more gender equality are being so openly flouted. Good research, Agent Claudia...

Thank you for sharing this unfortunate situation with us. Here's hoping that there are those who are willing and able to fulfill the intended spirit of this legislation.

Male politicians of all worlds are really reluctant letting go a part of their power to women. They are not thinking about their countries doing this. We have to change this ! Thank your for sharing, Claudia.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
