Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Corruption, international bribery...and the World Bank?

There have been some questions about who the World Bank is, and what their motives are behind UrgentEvoke. I haven't paid it much attention, as I believe that there is a lot of good coming out of the project regardless as to what THEY get out of it. For instance, I've become extremely active in learning and teaching about the things brought up by the game. On top of that, I can see that at least a few of my friends have become interested and are also spreading the word. With all that said, I was a little disturbed by what I heard about them in this video. It's a little hard to understand, but if you make it through the first half, you'll hear a little bit about what this speaker had to go through in speaking up against the World Bank and how he suggests we can all overcome such obstacles.

Additional References about World Bank
  • Strategy for Anti-Corruption - Paints a different picture of the World Bank, BUT this comes from the World Bank's website so I'm taking it with a grain of salt.
  • Article about World Bank being accused of corruption in 2004. This seems to be a relatively independent source. Here is the intro describing who they are.
  • Blog with a list of accusations and responses. Seems quite unofficial, but a good way to do more investigative follow-up to find out if there is anything behind these accusations.
  • Development Marketplace - A website run by the World Bank Institute (WBI), described as a platform for debate and knowledge sharing on early stage development, innovation and social entrepreneurship.

CRAP GUYS.

So Mita just emailed me and was like "You DO know about the honorarium for game runners, don't you?" To which I responded: "What honorarium?" At which point she linked me here: http://blog.avantgame.com/2010/01/urgent-evoke.html

So. I am apparently dumb and did not read the fine print about what I signed up for. D'oh. Sorry about that guys, didn't mean to disseminate inaccurate information. For those who don't click, Game Runners can qualify for a $1,000 Honorarium at the end of EVOKE. Iiiiii did not know this, I apologize.

@Sean That is so great! I feel like part of that is sort of intuitive, right? Like, obviously I'm going to work harder for something I want than for something someone else wants, or wants me to want. It's fantastic that you pulled that out of your students (And it sounds like a pretty interesting situation - I'd like to hear the story sometime. Link me if you blog about it?)

@Sean - Heh, thanks; I just feel dumb now. Still, I meant what I said about external/internal rewards. :) Part of my thesis was on something similar (optimal experience theories and the like) so I'm pretty passionate about it.

haha sean :)
and sarah you can rest easy now chelsea is going to get 1000 dollars at end of game
same amount as seed funding
good
now can we return to the puzzle and the missing pieces
evoke and the tie in with wbi
and what's the connection with wb?
after all we need to stick to the topic of the blog at least tangentially

lol, - Liberia is different and Libya , it's more clear cut - but corporates work in a different way , there it's about consent , you sign the contract then you have to stick by it because you gave your consent and you had the chnce to say no before signing on the dotted line and now you do the job till contract runs out and is extended or not - however meanwhile corporates offer you some sops , bride in the brand name, the feeling that you're part of a larger something that is in some way more significant to the world in what it offers than if youd be if you were just gallivanting around on your own
take intel
take WB
the people who belong to these organizations are highly intelligent and quite conscious and aware that they are part of something that's bringing change in a big way to the world change that they believe is for the better or they are ready to believe will be for the better in the future - and there's always a chance they will be proved right, it cannot be inconclusively written off as if it will never happen
that's the difference between the postion a cottica holds and an iron holds, by the way
so i wouldn't really call it abuse
what i mean to say is if intel is ripping you off while youre working for it or wb well you only have yourself to blame for it mainly becasue you had a choice whereas the children in liberia or libya never had one

All I am going to say is: The WB is a Bank, after all. And the rest, then, is to be expected.

As I wrote on a post in week 1 or 2: Search info about the WB on the web, magazines, people, newspapers, books . . . form your own opinion. WBI is the soft power from the hard power of the WB.

Evoke is a fascinating experiment in so many levels. I´ve met incredible people from every continent!!! I´ve learned about NGO´s and cool projects I only had imagined.

Games are a real tool for social innovation and I´m incorporating games to my project. It´s fun and Chelsea and Mita and all game runners (all receiving a symbolic payment but really doing it for love and fun) all confirm that indeed games bring the best of all humans.

We are neither black nor white - we are grey.

A nitpick: You do realize that it's a little hypocritical to take a blog seriously, then take the WBI site "with a grain of salt". Why not be skeptical of both, and tell us that skepticism. Otherwise it sounds like you've made a conclusion, but are masking it by looking as if you're just providing links.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
