Hans Rosling has used GapMinder to demonstrate what is happening with several issues concerning women.
Three issues are closely related: maternal mortality, childhood mortality, and population growth.
Maternal mortality
It is estimated that half a million women die during pregnancy and childbirth, but the uncertainty makes it difficult to determine if we are doing the right things that will reduce the number of deaths.
Child mortality
Nearly 10 million children under age 5 die every year. Most of this is caused by childhood diseases. Increasing income generally improves health, and thus reduces childhood mortality to a minimum.
What stops population growth?
Reducing maternal and childhood mortality will result in an increase in population growth, but it turns out we need to follow that path so we can then reduce birth rate to match a decreased death rate.
I wanted to find a correlation between increasing education of women and decreasing birth rate and eventual decrease in population growth. But there seems to be very limited data on education, ironically, so I'm still working on that. But here is a GapMinder graph (that I made) showing a clear correlation between birth rate, age at 1st marriage, infant mortality rate, and childre.... The countries with higher birth rate have higher infant mortality, more children per woman, and earlier marriages.
Breast cancer
Women die for other reasons besides complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Breast cancer turns out to be increasing as income grows, though in more recent years, the number of deaths is being reduced, but the treatments are expensive. So we need to find better ways to avoid getting breast cancer in the first place.
Cervical cancer
Unlike breast cancer, the number of cervical cancer incidences generally decreases with increasing income because the detection and treatment is very effective.
HIV
The global HIV epidemic, which affects men and women, has reached a "steady state" with about 1% of the adult world infected, which means it is not getting much worse or better. In Africa, there are huge differences across countries regarding how HIV spreads and how many survive. Get more info and see discussion at HIV: New facts and stunning data visuals

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More
In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More
