My favorite secret is Provide skills, not just finished technologies.

It is so important that we, as outsiders, come into a community to 'solve' the problem. We need to work with the community to create sustainable, long-term solutions. Teaching new skills is incredibly important so that a community can thrive on its own.

Also of note, prior to providing skills, one must also LISTEN to the right people and… Continue

The world continues to face urgent and ongoing problems, ranging from black swan events to miasmic trends. Based on the information shared on the "Innovation in Africa tips" post, one thing in particular stood out for me on all three entries: listen to the people around you and shape things to their culture.

If an innovator does not have the respect of the community, how are they going to change it? If the people of the society have no vested interest in what is being accomplished, how will they own it and use it when the innovator is gone? Just as the first entry says: "If they stir their… Continue

My favorite secret was this one: "talk to the people who have the problem – and LISTEN to what they have to say" It seems very simple. If you don't listen to the people you want to help, you can't identify what the problem is and you won't know how to help them. You'll not only learn what is a problem for them, but you may also gain insight on the solution.

The value of local wisdom

i am an object designer, an architect, an urban designer, a maker of things. also, i hate to be told by people how to do my job: i don't tell the plumber how to fix my sink, do i?

the problem is, i am only one person, with a limited amount of knowledge. when going to a different country, a different city, or even a different part of town, i can't claim to know anything about how people live, what they want, or what they need. and even if i needed to do…

Learning the Secret Code of Social Innovation #1

Listen to the right people.

"Ask, and you shall Receive"

Only recently have I begun to realise how powerful this motto can be.

Only recently have I begun to ask questions, instead of trying to figure things out by myself.

Only recently have I begun to ask for help, and have received help in return.

In the quest for social change and innovation, it…

Challenging my assumptions

Listen to the right people. Okay, so you probably don’t know what it’s like to carry fifty pounds of firewood on your head. Well, don’t pretend that

you do. Talk to someone who has done it. I believe that the key to

innovation in international development is truly understanding the

problem, and using your imagination is not good enough.

It reminds me of… Continue

"talk to the people who have the problem – and LISTEN to what they have to say"

Although I have had seen this idea before, I haven't put it to good use. I dislike using the term, secret, so let's call it an idea. This is an extremely powerful idea from the standpoint it can be utilized in all areas of our lives. Whether it is on a small scale and using it with family and friends, in your professional environment or on a grander scale, to change the world, Figure out the people that…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

The meal

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
